Breaking News | | GCL News: Playoffs begin Sunday, August 22nd, 2010: What began months ago as a dream is now reality. The trade deadline has passed, along with all the GMs' wheeling and dealing. Contract negotiations are on hold until another time. Front office work is all but on the back burner. Now it's time for each club, player, coach and manager to put a unique imprint on Gulf Coast League history. Nobody will remember the free agent who got away last winter. No one will care about the trade that fell through right before the deadline. People will remember just one thing about the playoffs -- the team that wins the Round 2 crown. That's the reason they play the game. The Round 1 starts today with these match-ups: Jupiter (FLO) Marlins versus Clearwater Phillies and Sarasota (BAL) Orioles versus Lake Buena Vista Braves. | | GCL News: Regular Season ends Sunday, August 22nd, 2010: The 2010 regular season is now history, and all the championship contenders have been determined. The Gulf Coast League playoffs will begin in just a few days. This is the renowned "Second Season," which decides the league's top team. The winner of the Round 2 will be this year's champions. | | Santiago Hurls Braves to Shutout Win Saturday, August 21st, 2010: Before the game Eduardo Santiago liked his chances and his instincts proved to be right. In a superb outing the Braves pitcher whitewashed the Lakeland Tigers 8-0.
Santiago said in the clubhouse afterward, "I just had a feeling it was going to be my day. My control was awesome. I could throw my curveball even when I was behind in the count."
The Lake Buena Vista starter held Lakeland scoreless, giving up 1 hit while registering 9 strikeouts and issuing no walks.
"We didn't have very many good at-bats," the Tigers manager said in his postgame interview.
"When that happens, you usually lose."
Santiago has gone 4-1 this season with an ERA of 0.92 and 31 strikeouts in 39 innings pitched. Other clubs are hitting .179 against him. | | | | |
